Man arrested for allegedly pointing gun at driver during Mesa road rage incident

PHOENIX — Mesa police arrested a 22-year-old after he allegedly pointed a gun at a victim during a road rage incident over the weekend, authorities announced Monday.

The incident took place in the area of Stapley Road and U.S. 60 around 8 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Mesa Police Department.

Brian Lopez was arrested and booked into jail on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of possessing a firearm as a prohibited possessor, police said.

Officers who responded to the scene spoke with the victim, who said the incident started when a white BMW cut him off while he was exiting U.S. 60 at Stapley Road.

The victim said he and Lopez exchanged words at a stoplight, during which Lopez allegedly pulled out a handgun with a green laser and pointed it at him before driving away.

Officers used footage from the Mesa Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center to track down footage of the BMW, which allowed them to see the license plate number and the direction Lopez was traveling.

Mesa police tracked down the vehicle as Lopez was re-entering U.S. 60 at Gilbert Road. They detained him as well as three other passengers without incident.

Investigators found a handgun with the green laser inside Lopez’s car. They also discovered Lopez is a convicted felon, which prohibits him from possessing firearms.
