Man accused of killing girlfriend after car crashes into Phoenix home

PHOENIX — A  man has been arrested for the death of his girlfriend after the woman was found with a bullet wound inside a car that crashed into a Phoenix home on Saturday, according to authorities.

Probable cause was developed to arrest 37-year-old Carnell Cunningham and he was booked into jail Sunday on murder and aggravated assault charges.

Police responded to the area of Bethany Home Road and 43rd Avenue around 3:30 p.m. in response to a call of a woman being assaulted in a vehicle that subsequently crashed into a house.

The woman, 23-year-old Mikayla Ballesteros, was found inside the car suffering from a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Witnesses restrained Cunningham from leaving the scene, according to authorities.

Cunningham was transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries sustained in the collision and was later arrested after being interviewed at Phoenix Police headquarters.

There were no injuries to the residents of the house, according to authorities.

The investigation is ongoing.
