Mail destroyed when US Postal Service semitruck catches fire in Phoenix

PHOENIX – “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

That famous U.S. Postal Service credo never mentions flames — for good reason.

A load of Phoenix-area mail went up in smoke over the weekend when a loaded USPS semitruck caught fire, authorities said Tuesday.

The truck was near its destination of the West Valley Processing and Distribution Center near Interstate 10 and 51st Avenue in Phoenix on Saturday when the fire broke out, the USPS said in a press release.

Nobody was injured, but an unspecified amount of mail was destroyed. The cause of the fire was unknown.

The truck was coming from the Daisy Mountain Station in far north Phoenix near I-17 and Anthem Way.

Anybody who thinks their mail may have been destroyed was asked to call the USPS customer service line at 800-275-8777.
