Driver arrested for street racing at 120 mph on Loop 101 tells trooper, ‘At least I was in front’

A driver was arrested and booked on street racing charges after an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper clocked him going 120 mph on the Loop 101, authorities said.

The incident unfolded Friday night after Scottsdale police tipped off DPS that a large car meet in the area was expected to lead to street racing, according to a post on the agency’s official Facebook page.

A trooper spotted a group of cars pull alongside one another and rapidly accelerated, DPS said.

The convertible pulled ahead of the pack and started weaving in and out of traffic, reaching 120 mph, the agency said. Police lights were enough to slow the other driver, but the convertible kept going.

When the trooper pulled the driver over and told him one of the reasons for the stop was that he never slowed down, the driver replied, “At least I was in front.”

He was arrested and booked for street racing.

More than 1,200 people die on Arizona roads every year, according to DPS data.
