Loop 101 closure, I-10 restriction planned this weekend

PHOENIX — A section of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway will be closed and a section of Interstate 10 will be restricted this weekend, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Westbound Loop 101 will be closed between Seventh Street and Interstate 17 from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

The westbound Loop 101 on-ramp at Cave Creek Road and the westbound on-ramps to both directions of Interstate 17 will also be closed.

Westbound Loop 101 traffic can exit at Seventh Street and take the Beardsley frontage road or take alternate routes like Union Hills Drive or Deer Valley Road.

The closure is part of the Loop 101 improvement project, which will add a fourth lane in each direction along the 13-mile stretch by 2021, among other additions.

Westbound I-10 will be narrowed to one lane at 67th Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Eastbound I-10 will be narrowed to one lane at 59th Avenue from 7 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday.

Both closures are for work on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway interchange.

The 22-mile stretch of highway, which is scheduled to open in late 2019, will provide a new connection for motorists traveling between the East Valley and West Valley that bypasses downtown Phoenix.

The agency said drivers can expect more frequent I-10 closures in the next several months as the project moves toward completion.
