Longtime musician at Mesa’s Organ Stop Pizza dies

PHOENIX — A longtime musician at Mesa’s Organ Stop Pizza died from stroke complications last week, according to the restaurant.

Charlie Balogh played at the eatery from 1973 to 1976, when there was a location in Phoenix, then began playing at the Mesa restaurant in 1991.

“Organ Stop Pizza has truly lost a great talent and wonderful human being. Charlie leaves behind an incredible legacy, especially in the organ world,” a statement on the restaurant’s website read.

“No words can express our sadness at Charlie’s death or our gratitude for his commitment and love for Organ Stop Pizza throughout the years.”

Hundreds of people expressed their condolences on Organ Stop’s Facebook page.

“Knowing Charlie’s affinity for Big Band and Swing music, Heaven just became a much livelier place,” one fan said.

“Just a few months ago we had dinner and enjoyed listening to Charlie at the keys. We will truly miss hearing him play,” wrote another.

Balogh, born in New Jersey, began playing music at age 11 and studied the organ at Trenton State College.

He was named Organist of the Year in 2000 by the American Theatre Organ Society, according to the restaurant.

His brother set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the family’s expenses.

Organ Stop Pizza first opened in Phoenix in 1972 before the building was sold in 1984 and demolished.

A location opened in Mesa in 1975 and moved to Stapley Drive and Southern Avenue in 1995.
