Light rail extension project to affect Phoenix service for 2 weeks

PHOENIX — Construction on a light rail extension project will affect service in Phoenix for two weeks beginning Saturday, according to Valley Metro.

Work on the South Central Extension/Downtown Hub project will continue through March 26, causing three downtown stations to be closed.

The stations at First Avenue and Van Buren Street, First Avenue and Jefferson Street, and Third and Jefferson streets will be out of operation.

Riders can instead board for both directions of the light rail at Van Buren Street and Central Avenue, Washington Street and Central Avenue and Third and Washington streets.

Service will be offered every 30 minutes instead of the typical 15 minutes on weekdays during peak hours.

Riders are asked to plan ahead during the construction.

Valley Metro’s 5.5-mile project, which will connect south Phoenix with the downtown corridor, is estimated to cost $1.35 billion.
