Latter-day Saints church to build a temple in northern Arizona

PHOENIX — A new temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is coming to Flagstaff.

It was one of 15 cities across the world where new temples were announced by LDS President Russell M. Nelson during the church’s general conference on Sunday.

“We are grateful to the Lord for the acceleration of temple building in recent years,” Nelson said in a Sunday social media video. “Under His direction, today we announce plans to construct a temple in each of these 15 locations.”

Temple sites are widely considered the most sacred places of worship for members of the church.

Flagstaff to host one of the many LDS temples in Arizona

Nelson has announced 200 temples since becoming president in 2018.

His Sunday announcement bumps the number of existing or planned LDS temples in Arizona up to nine. The current temples are in Mesa, Gilbert, Phoenix, Snowflake, the Gila Valley and Tucson.

Two other temples have been announced but are yet to be completed. Those are in Queen Creek and Yuma.

A church announcement detailing the 15 new LDS temples said there are around 450,000 Latter-day Saints in Arizona. The first members arrived to Arizona in the winter of 1846. The state currently has the fourth largest amount of Latter-day Saints in the nation.
