Large sinkhole shuts down Phoenix intersection after storms hit

PHOENIX — A Phoenix intersection was completely closed Tuesday because of a sinkhole that developed during a day of record rainfall.

The closure at Cactus Road and 35th Avenue was expected to extend into Wednesday night, the city said in press release.

Transportation crews were at the site to assess the situation and determine the best way to go about making repairs.

Motorists were asked to plan ahead and avoid the area.

There were no reports of vehicle damage caused by the sinkhole.

There were multiple road closures across the region due to flooding throughout the day, but most were reopened as the heavy rain moved out of the Valley.

The latest information about emergency closures can be found on the city’s website.

With 2.24 inches of rain as of 3 p.m., a record for the date, it was the ninth-wettest day in Phoenix history.
