KTAR News legal expert shares tips on behaving at work holiday parties

PHOENIX — ‘Tis the season for company holiday parties!

This year, KTAR News legal expert Monica Lindstrom gave us a quick rundown on how to have a good time but avoid running into problems while mixing work and play.

To start things off, it’s a good idea to eat, drink and be merry in moderation.

“Unless you are protected under law or contractually, you can be fired for getting drunk or acting inappropriately,” Lindstrom told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

But not everyone needs alcohol in their system to act inappropriately. Lindstrom doesn’t recommend bringing out any race, religion or gender jokes.

“It’s still a work-sponsored event, and that can result in a hostile work environment claim or sex assault claim,” Lindstrom added.

So with that in mind, do you know what you plan on wearing to your work shindig? Maybe steer clear of anything that lets it all hang out.

“You need to use common sense,” Lindstrom said. “This is a work event, not a night at the bar.”

Whatever you do this holiday season, Lindstrom said it’s a good idea to remember your human resources director is somewhere in the crowd at your party.
