Kari Lake campaign office in Phoenix evacuated after substance found

PHOENIX — Reports of a suspicious substance at Kari Lake’s campaign office in Phoenix forced an evacuation on Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

The Phoenix Fire Department said the hazmat situation took place near 40th Street and Camelback Road after hearing one of the building’s tenants received an envelope with the substance.

Phoenix Police officers and firefighters emptied the building.

Phoenix Fire Department Hazardous Materials crews investigated the substance.

However, authorities ultimately tested the substance and deemed it was not hazardous, according to Phoenix Fire.

Phoenix Fire said at 2:30 p.m. the occupants would be let back into the office shortly.

Kari Lake comments on suspicious substance, evacuation

Lake speculated on social media that the mysterious substance might have been anthrax.

An intern opened a letter that said the powder contained anthrax, according to a Lake campaign spokesperson.

“Today, my office received a suspicious envelope, potentially containing anthrax—an attempt to intimidate and silence me,” Lake said in a Tuesday social media post. “I want to thank all the first responders and the hazmat team for their swift and professional response.”

Phoenix Fire said there were no immediate threats to the community.

This is an ongoing investigation.

No injuries were reported.
