Fire crews douse west Phoenix junkyard fire that scorched 7 vehicles

Firefighters knocked down a junkyard fire at an auto shop in west Phoenix on Tuesday afternoon that resulted in a plume of smoke visible for miles.

The fire was reported at 1:44 p.m. near 35th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.

More than a dozen units were sent to the scene, including multiple engines, ladder trucks, rescue units and hazardous materials teams. A battalion chief assumed command shortly after arrival, while a second battalion chief and other personnel worked on scene. Additional engines were placed in staging positions nearby.

Crews kept the flames from spreading to a nearby structure, the Phoenix Fire Department said in a social media update. A total of seven vehicles were involved in the fire.

No injuries were immediately reported, and the cause of the fire was not known.

Phoenix Fire said that traffic in the area was not impacted by the blaze.
