July 2020 entering record books as hottest month in Phoenix history

PHOENIX – July 2020 will go into the record books as the hottest month in Phoenix history.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix said Friday that the preliminary average temperature of 99 degrees is nearly a full degree hotter than the city’s previous record.

August 2011 and July 2009, which each had averages of 98.3 degrees, will take a step back on the all-time list.

Carefree, Litchfield Park and Globe are also seeing their hottest months ever, the National Weather Service tweeted.

On Thursday, Phoenix shattered an 86-year-old record for the date, hitting 118 degrees to blow past the 115 degrees recorded July 30, 1934.

Thursday was the hottest day of the year in Phoenix and tied for the sixth-hottest ever.

Friday was expected to approach or surpass the July 31 record of 115 degrees.

An excessive heat warning went into effect for the Valley on Wednesday and is set to run until 8 p.m. Monday.

During periods of extreme heat, experts advise people to stay hydrated, limit the amount of time outside, try to stay inside air conditioned buildings and remember to check on elderly family members and neighbors.

People should also watch for warning signs of heat-related illnesses, which can include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache and nausea.
