PHOENIX — A jackknifed truck forced the closure of northbound Interstate 17 on Thursday just north of the Phoenix metro area, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

The roadway was shutdown for about an hour after the 4:30 p.m. closure. The truck was removed from the roadway about 5:45 p.m.

The incident happened at milepost 232, which is near New River.

Traffic cameras showed the backup was already stretching for miles.

Motorists looking to head north were advised to delay their travel plans if possible, though some were able to get by the truck on the shoulder.

Southbound traffic was not affected.
