PHOENIX — The calendar may say it’s fall in Arizona, but don’t tell thermometers in the Phoenix area which is expected to flirt with record highs this week.

The National Weather Service’s forecast calls for a high of 104 degrees on Tuesday and 106 on Wednesday and Thursday. The record for the latter two days is just one degree higher at 107.

Last week, Phoenix officially marked the 100th day of 2015 with a high temperature of at least 100 degrees. The mercury is typically a bit lower this time of year, but it’s not unheard of for things to stay hot into October.

“We have had some years where the last 100-degree day of the year wasn’t until the middle or even the end of October,” Dan Leins, a spokesman for the National Weather Service, said.

At this time of the year, the Phoenix area is typically hovering around the mid- to low-90s, a sign that the balmy temperatures of fall and winter are on their way. Residents can take some solace in the fact that lows are expected to be below 80 degrees every night.

Thankfully, after this week’s jump in highs, temperatures are expected to drop into the high 90s by the weekend with a slight chance of storms.

Wednesday marks the official close of the monsoon season.
