Ironman triathlon to shut down streets across Tempe this weekend

PHOENIX – Watch out for detours in the Tempe Town Lake area this weekend as endurance athletes descend upon the East Valley city for a triathlon competition.

Dozens of road restrictions will be implemented along the route of Sunday morning’s Ironman 70.3 Arizona race.

The event starts at at 6:20 a.m. with a 1.2-mile swim in the lake.

That will be followed by a 56-mile bike ride that stretches between McClintock Road and Priest Drive on both sides of the lake.

Competitors will close things out with a 13.1-mile run mainly along Rio Salado Parkway.

Most of the roadblocks will be up from 5:30 a.m. until around 6 p.m. Sunday.

Rio Salado Parkway has been closed in both directions between Mill and Ash avenues since Thursday and won’t reopen until noon Monday.

Spectators are welcome, and the use of public transportation to get to the downtown area is encouraged.
