Man dies after being shot by Phoenix police, investigation underway

A man has died after police shot him in Phoenix on Sunday, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to a call around 11 a.m. regarding a “suicidal” person in an alley near 19th Avenue and Cheryl Drive. The caller reported that the person, who was a family member of the caller, was armed with a knife and was trying to harm himself.

Upon arrival, officers found 20-year-old Jonathan Marquez Delgado armed with a knife in the alley and harming himself. After refusing multiple commands from officers to drop the knife, he began walking toward the officers. 

Officers then deployed a Taser against Delgado, which was ineffective in stopping him. He then ran toward police, and two officers fired their weapons, which struck Delgado. Police provided medical aid to Delgado, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Phoenix police said no officers were injured in the shooting.

The Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division is handling the investigation of the shooting. No other information was made available.
