Suspect arrested in connection with I-10 shooting that left 2 injured in Tempe

PHOENIX — A suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting near the Interstate 10 freeway in Tempe that left two people injured, according to the Tempe Police Department.

The incident began when a 34-year-old man was allegedly standing on the side of the freeway and waving a gun. The man then fired shots and struck at a passing vehicle. The driver, who was not injured by the gunfire, exited the freeway and contacted the police.

The man then fled into the parking lot of Tempe Diablo Stadium before entering the Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes. Upon arrival, the man allegedly confronted two hotel employees and ordered them to the ground before firing several shots which struck them.

The injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to authorities.

The man then fled throughout the resort and attempted to carjack a woman who was able to flee from her car. Police were able to find the man and arrest him without further incident.

The crime caused a temporary blockage of the right lane of the eastbound I-10 after Broadway. The hotel was also evacuated due to the incident.

The Arizona Department of Transportation initially warned the public that the blockage was caused by law enforcement activity.
