Interstate 10 restricted in West Valley for South Mountain Freeway work

PHOENIX — Interstate 10 will be narrowed to one lane overnight in west Phoenix this week to allow crews to continue bridge work at the South Mountain Freeway interchange.

The westbound portion of the highway will be restricted between 35th and 59th avenues from 9 p.m. on Monday to 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

The eastbound portion of the highway will be narrowed between 75th and 59th avenues from 8 p.m. on Tuesday through 4 a.m. on Friday.

Drivers are encouraged to give themselves extra travel time or use alternative routes if they plan on being on the road during that time.

Construction on the 22-mile South Mountain Freeway interchange began in 2017 and is expected to be complete in 2020, but drivers have already started to use a portion of the highway.

As part of the construction, Pecos Road from 17th to 24th streets will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Friday nights into April.

The South Mountain Freeway will pick up where the Loop 202 currently ends at Interstate 10 in Chandler and reconnect with I-10 at 59th Avenue in west Phoenix.

It will connect the East Valley and West Valley with a route that bypasses downtown Phoenix.

It was approved by voters in 1985 and 2004 as part of a comprehensive regional transportation plan.

ADOT estimates that as many as 190,000 vehicles will use the route daily by 2035.
