Authorities identify woman’s body found near canal in Phoenix, investigation ongoing

PHOENIX — The woman who was found dead near a canal in Phoenix on Friday morning has been identified, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to a call regarding “unknown trouble” near 28th and Oak streets around 7:40 a.m. on Friday.

Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive woman, later identified as 42-year-old Alex Fleming, near a canal bank. Fleming’s body showed signs of trauma, and the Phoenix Fire Department later pronounced her dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives took over the ongoing investigation.

Authorities said the area by the Grand Canal Trail was canvassed to locate surveillance footage. The Office of the Medical Examiner is in possession of Fleming’s body, and a postmortem examination is pending.
