Hurricane Rosa expected to bring rain, flooding to Arizona

PHOENIX — There’s more rain on the way, but this time it’s not from a monsoon storm.

Remnants of Hurricane Rosa are expected to bring isolated thunderstorms and heavy rain to Arizona starting Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service expects the precipitation to peak late Monday into early Tuesday, when Phoenix is predicted to have an 86 percent chance of rain.

Up to 4 inches could fall in Flagstaff, Payson and Prescott through Wednesday.

The Grand Canyon’s North Rim is expected to get up to 6 inches.

Phoenix residents can expect to see 1.5 to 3 inches of rain.

“Phoenix may not see as much, but if it goes right over and sits over us for a little bit, we could rack up some really healthy amounts,” Mark O’Malley, National Weather Service spokesman, told KTAR News 92.3 FM Friday.

There is a flash flood warning in effect Monday and Tuesday for Phoenix and surrounding areas.

But O’Malley said there’s still a good chance the rain could be much less than predicted.

“There’s still a lot of uncertainty on the exact track of where it’s going to go when it gets up here … it’s still days out from Arizona,” O’Malley said.

Hurricane Rosa was downgraded from Category 4 to 3 on Friday and is approaching the Southwest off the coast of Mexico.

The official end of monsoon season is Sunday.
