Human skull found at South Mountain Park being investigated as a homicide

PHOENIX — Phoenix police said Saturday the case of a human skull being found at South Mountain Park is now being investigated as a homicide.

A hiker found the skull just before 2 p.m. on Jan. 14, the Phoenix Department said in a press release.

During a search at South Mountain Park and Preserve on Saturday detectives located additional human remains, which were given to the Maricopa County Forensic Medical Center.

Detectives continue to work this case as the skull showed what appeared to be trauma, Phoenix police said.

The department said it is actively following up on all leads and will work with the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office and missing persons detectives to identify the victim and suspect.
