Homeless shelter for Phoenix-area veterans forced to dismantle due to city violations
Camp Alpha, the name given to the homeless camp at 15th Avenue and Hatcher Road in Phoenix, was given orders to be forced to dismantle by Thursday.
PHOENIX — A homeless camp made to house Phoenix-area veterans has been forced to dismantle just barely one week before Christmas.
Camp Alpha, the name given to the homeless camp at 15th Avenue and Hatcher Road in Phoenix, was given orders to be forced to dismantle by Thursday.
The closure came after neighbors and nearby businesses began complaining to the City of Phoenix, who began threatening to impose fines to the landowner if the camp was not shut down.
Tamra Ingersoll with the City of Phoenix said officials began contacting an unidentified landowner to shut down the camp for violating city ordinances.
“We contacted the landowner and we notified the landowner that he was violating city ordinances and zoning in regard to the use of the land,” she said.
Ingersoll said the landowner complied and asked Camp Alpha residents to leave the property on Monday in order to avoid any fines, fees or violations.
Ingersoll said City of Phoenix officials have been working to place the veterans in other homeless shelters or get them any type of assistance they may need.
