Mesa man indicted for string of Home Depot self-checkout thefts

A Mesa man has been indicted on 44 felony counts related to what authorities call organized retail thefts at Home Depot locations.

Chad Planck, 53, was indicted for stealing more than $9,000 worth of merchandise from the home improvement store using a self-checkout scam.

Prosecutors allege that between January and April 2026, Planck filled shopping carts at six Home Depot stores across Mesa with power tools. He would then use a “skip scanning” scheme to steal the products. Planck allegedly paid for smaller items at self-checkout, then left with higher-priced items he didn’t pay for.

Each incident was captured on store surveillance cameras.

Planck’s bond has been set at $53,000.
