30 state agencies to participate in hiring event for veterans, public

PHOENIX — Over 30 state agencies are looking to hire job applicants on the spot during a massive hiring event in Phoenix on March 20.

The Arizona Department of Administration is hosting the event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wesley Bolin Plaza, which is across from the Arizona Capitol.

Jobseekers will be able to have interviews for various positions. They may even be able to walk away with a job.

From 10 a.m. to noon, the hiring event will focus exclusively on candidates who are veterans. It’s part of the AZ Hires Vets initiative. However, from noon to 2 p.m., all prospective employees, whether they’re veterans or not, are welcome.

Do jobseekers need degrees, certifications to go to hiring event in Phoenix?

Jobseekers without degrees or professional certifications shouldn’t be discouraged from showing up. While some employers will require those credentials, most are focusing on skills-based hiring.

That’s because Arizona is part of the “Transformers in the Public Sector” initiative. This coalition of state governments is focused on helping people with valuable skills they developed through alternative routes — such as on jobs or through military service — find jobs.

“It’s clear that our nation’s veterans are the best of the best,” Arizona Department of Administration Chief Human Resources Officer George McNeely said in a Monday news release. “They deserve our support.”

Many of the people served through this initiative are veterans. However, it also benefits people who have learned various skills through on-the-job experience.

“Veterans embody the spirit of ‘service before self’ that all public servants strive for,” McNeely said. “They possess natural leadership skills and are great problem solvers, making them among the most highly trained workers in the world.”

How many roles are open in hiring event in Phoenix?

Nearly 700 jobs are up for grabs. There’s a wide variety in available positions, from program specialists to case aides. Here are a few other open roles:

• Electrician with the Arizona Department of Corrections.
• Special agent with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.
• Network administrator with the Arizona Health Care Containment System.
• Mental health therapist with the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections.
• Wildlife habitat construction technician with the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
• Financial analyst with the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions.

People who attend the event can access more than just job interviews. There are also resources that can help them find future positions.

They can bring their resumes and get expert reviews from recruiters. Interviewing tips and help searching for state jobs are two services provided at the event.
