Hiker dies after 40-foot fall at popular Phoenix Papago Park spot

A hiker who fell about 40 feet while climbing a popular trail in Phoenix died Sunday, authorities said.

PHOENIX — A hiker who fell about 40 feet while climbing a popular trail in Phoenix died Sunday, authorities said.

A man in his 20s was brought down from Papago Park’s Hole in the Rock Trail around 6 p.m. Saturday, a Phoenix Fire Department spokesman said in an email.

Paramedics loaded the injured hiker onto a big wheel stretcher and safely got him down the rest of the trail.

The hiker was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and later was pronounced dead.

Authorities didn’t release the man’s name but said he was in his 20s. His name wasn’t released.

No other information was available.

The climb to the inside of the landmark rock formation on the park’s east side is about 200 feet high.
