Hiker who says he was stung over 100 times by bees on Phoenix mountain in critical condition

PHOENIX — A hiker who said he was stung over 100 times by bees on a mountain in Phoenix was hospitalized in critical condition on Saturday.

Rescue teams from the Phoenix and Glendale fire departments responded to Lookout Mountain around 10 a.m. for reports of multiple bee stings.

When they made contact with the man near the summit, he told them that he could not continue his descent after being “stung over 100 times,” according to Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Todd Keller.

The man was taken off the mountain by helicopter and was then taken to the hospital by ambulance in critical condition.

The Phoenix Fire Department issued the following bee safety tips:

• Do not disturb or throw rocks at a bee hive
• Wear lightly colored clothing, as bees are attracted to colors that resemble the characteristics of their natural predators
• Avoid wearing scents or perfumes of any sort when hiking or working outside, as bees are sensitive to odors
• If you encounter a bee colony, run away and cover your head.
