Hazmat incident at a West Valley medical clinic sends 3 people to hospital

Three people were taken to a hospital Friday morning during a hazardous materials incident at a West Valley medical clinic, authorities said.

Firefighters were dispatched on a hazmat call at the Buckeye Commons shopping center near Interstate 10 and Verrado Way about 10 a.m., according to the Buckeye Fire Medical Rescue Department.

The call came in after about 1 liter of phenol accidentally spilled inside a medical clinic. Phenol is a toxic and corrosive chemical solvent with a variety of medical uses.

Paramedics evaluated four patients before taking three to a hospital in stable condition. The fourth patient declined a hospital trip.

Hazmat technicians stabilized the scene, which was confined to the interior of the clinic, and turned it over to cleanup specialists.
