Havasupai Tribal Council votes to extend tourism suspension until June

PHOENIX — The Havasupai Tribal Council announced Wednesday the suspension of tourism would be extended until June 1 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Havasupai Reservation and Supai Village have been closed to all tourists since the pandemic began in March 2020 and will remain in lockdown for the foreseeable future, according to a message posted online.

Campground, lodge and pack mule reservations after May 31 will not be impacted at this time, the tribe said, but reservations held before that will be rescheduled for the same date in 2023.

No new reservations will be available until the tourism suspension is lifted.

The National Park Service also requests people on river trips bypass Havasu Canyon on the Colorado River to minimize the spread of the virus and further safeguard the Havasupai people.

A previous suspension of tourism was extended by the tribe in June 2021 until February 2022 due to the pandemic.

The tribe said it has been actively involved in vaccination efforts and looks forward to welcoming tourists back when it is safe to do so.
