Harkins to honor Rutger Hauer with Valley ‘Blade Runner’ screenings

PHOENIX — A Scottsdale-based movie theater chain will honor the late actor Rutger Hauer with discount movie screenings starting Friday.

Harkins Theatres will host $5 screenings of “Blade Runner: The Final Cut” through Thursday, with four Valley theaters each hosting one showing per day.

Hauer, a Dutch actor, is known for his portrayal of Roy Batty in the 1982 science fiction classic.

He also starred as a villain in “Nighthawks” and “Batman Begins” and won a supporting actor Golden Globe award in 1988 for “Escape from Sobibor.”

Hauer died at age 75 in his home in the Netherlands on July 19.

All proceeds from the event will go to The Rutger Hauer Starfish Association, which focuses on HIV and AIDS awareness.
