Hance Park in Phoenix getting grand entryway from Central Avenue

PHOENIX — Margaret T. Hance Park is getting a new grand entryway from Central Avenue in Phoenix.

The renovation is the next phase of the Margaret T. Hance Park Revitalization Project to transform the park into “a vital urban destination and hub of civic, cultural and economic life,” a press release said.

“Hance Park is an important part of District 7 and a space that brings our community together,” Phoenix City Councilmember Anna Hernandez said. “The staircase improvements will strengthen access to the park and help ensure that this space continues to grow as a safe and welcoming destination for our neighborhoods and the broader downtown community.”

The revitalization project is a public-private partnership led by the Hance Park Partner Coalition, which includes the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, Phoenix Community Alliance and Hance Park Conservancy, the release said.

Part of the project includes enhancing four stairway entrances into the park with designed staircases and sloped pathways to improve circulation and visibility.

The Arizona Public Service (APS) is pledging $250,000 to create the “Hance Park Gateway Staircase.”

The project will also add shade trees and drought-tolerant plants to create a more cohesive and functional park experience.

All the enhancements being made are to improve safety, accessibility and overall connectivity of one of downtown Phoenix’s signature public spaces, the release said.

Hance Park spans 23 acres over the Interstate 10 tunnel, with Burton Barr Library, the Japanese Friendship Garden and the arts district in close proximity.
