Man dead, woman hospitalized after gunfire breaks out in south Phoenix

PHOENIX – A man was killed and a woman was injured when gunfire broke out in south Phoenix early Monday, authorities said.

Officers responded to a shooting call in a neighborhood near 15th and Southern avenues around 12:50 a.m. and found two gunshot victims, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Phoenix Fire Department responders arrived and pronounced 29-year-old Rashaad Johnson dead at the scene.

The other victim, a 32-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital in stable condition with injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening.

Investigators determined that Johnson was in a confrontation outside his apartment when the shooting occurred.

Both victims and multiple residences in the area were hit with gunfire.

Suspect arrested in connection with fatal gunfire

A suspect in the shooting, 49-year-old Refugio Jimenez, was identified and located by police on Thursday after an extensive search.

Police said Jimenez discarded a firearm and was wearing body armor during the apprehension. He also was allegedly in possession of methamphetamine.

When interviewed by investigators, Jimenez provided a self-defense claim that was not supported by the scene evidence, police said.

He was later booked into Maricopa County jail on multiple felony charges, including first degree murder, burglary, prohibited weapon possession and possession of a dangerous drug, police said.
