Grocery chain Safeway closing two Phoenix-area stores

PHOENIX — Safeway is closing two Phoenix-area locations to “strengthen operational efficiencies,” the grocery chain announced Wednesday.

The stores closing are at 32nd Street and Thunderbird Road in Phoenix and 59th Avenue and Thunderbird in Glendale.

A news release said the stores were expected to close in late July, and Safeway was working to transfer employees to other locations.

“The decision was difficult and involved a lengthy evaluation,” the release said. “Ultimately the closures will strengthen operational efficiencies.”

Safeway merged with Albertson’s in 2015, but the parent company continued to operate stores under both names in Arizona.
