Google bringing its GFiber internet service to Apache Junction residents

PHOENIX — Apache Junction residents will soon have another option for internet service when Google Fiber, otherwise known as GFiber, is up and running.

The Apache Junction’s city council approved the implementation of GFiber at Tuesday night’s meeting, and construction is slated to begin later this year, according to a press release.

“Our mission is to serve our residents by focusing and investing in quality of life and planned improvements,” Apache Junction City Manager Bryant Powell said. “The internet has become an essential part of our day-to-day lives, and partnering with GFiber means our community will have access to fast, dependable service.”

GFiber uses fiber optic infrastructures, which allow for data to be transmitted at rates nearing the speed of light. It allows for GFiber to offer up to 8-gigabyte speeds. For comparison, that’s roughly four times the maximum speed offered by Cox.

The Google service touts a $70 monthly rate for its 1-gig speed that has not changed since 2012. It has two other rates for speeds at 3 and 8 gigs.

We look forward to providing the people of this great community with the tools they need to thrive in a digital world.”

Apache Junction is the fifth Valley municipality to add GFiber service, following Mesa, Chandler, Tempe and most recently Queen Creek.
