Goodyear releases 3 great horned owls after 6 months of treatment

PHOENIX — There’s no better time to go home than the holidays.

And following six months of treatment, three great horned owls did just that earlier this week after being released back into the wild by the city of Goodyear.

When the owls were just babies, they were rescued and cared for by Fallen Feathers Rescue, Rehabilitation and Education.

“We have a lot of support from Goodyear residents,” Larry Licari with Fallen Feathers said in a press release. “The support, combined with the city’s natural wildlife, makes it the perfect place to release the owls.”

The event took place at the future location of Goodyear Civic Square — located on 150th Drive and McDowell Road — which will serve as a community gathering spot for events such as concerts, festivals and parades.

Goodyear Deputy City Manager Wynette Reed, acting Police Chief Jimmy Rodriguez and Fire Chief Paul Luizzi each individually released one owl.

“The owls are amazing and beautiful creatures. I was so honored to part of the release, especially at the future site of Goodyear Civic Square,” Reed said in the release.

“Releasing the owls at this location is symbolic of our city’s future and new beginnings.”
