Glendale Police warns against drinking and driving during Final Four

PHOENIX — Don’t drink and drive at the Final Four – and if you have to, take Uber.

That’s the message the Glendale Police Department has for all the Final Four revelers, whether they live in Arizona or not.

“[Arizona] will process your DUI the same way as if you’re an Arizona resident,” said chief Rick St. John. “You’ll receive the same opportunities through court. But, the sentencing would be the same.”

A first-time DUI conviction in Arizona can lead to 10 days in jail and over $1,200 in fines. St. John says using Uber can help you avoid all of that.

“With our technology, we want to help everyone celebrate a safe NCAA championship weekend,” said Uber safety spokesperson Tracey Breeden.

Breeden said as a former police officer – and victim of a drunk driver while off duty — she knows how important it is to have a designated driver.

At the Final Four events and games this weekend, Glendale officers and Uber staff will give attendees pocket-size cards with information on the dangers of drunk driving. The card also has a code on the card for $5 off rides to or from the University of Phoenix stadium area.

Roger Laltoo is an Uber driver from Gilbert. He said he’s ready to help anyone who needs it. “Uber is extremely reasonable, in comparison to the excessive fines that one might incur while being prosecuted for DUI,” he said.

Laltoo’s mother was injured in a drunk-driving accident when he was around nine or ten. He was in the vehicle at the time and still remembers it. “If I can remove one drunk person from the road, that’s one less person that may have to deal with such an occurrence,” he said.
