40-year-old man shot by officers in Glendale dead after hospitalization

PHOENIX — A suspect who was allegedly armed when Glendale police officers shot him on Tuesday morning has died.

Vincent Cerda Jr., 40, was shot around 10 a.m. near 29th Avenue and McDowell Road, according to the Glendale Police Department.

In a Wednesday update, police said he died after being brought to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

What led up to fatal shooting involving Glendale police?

Before the shooting, officers with the Glendale Police Department were conducting surveillance at a home in west Phoenix as part of an aggravated assault investigation.

Cerda was the suspect in that case, police said. When officers contacted him, Cerda allegedly fled, after which police pursued him on foot.

During the chase, Cerda allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers, after which they opened fire on him, police said.

No bystanders or officers were hurt, and the Phoenix Police Department is investigating the incident.
