Girl, 16, dies after gun handled by teen boy fires, according to police

A 16-year-old girl died in Phoenix on Sunday night after apparently being shot when a gun handled by another teen discharged, authorities said.

PHOENIX – A 16-year-old girl died in Phoenix on Sunday night after apparently being shot when a gun handled by another teen discharged, authorities said.

Phoenix police said Monday afternoon they arrested a 16-year-old male suspect on a negligent homicide charge.

Officers responded to the scene near 19th and Peoria avenues around 10 p.m. to find the victim, who died after being taken to a hospital, according to police.

The suspect, who was in the room with the girl, told officers he was handling a firearm that went off, police said.

The boy was in police custody Monday morning.

No other details about the incident were immediately available.

The case remains under investigation.
