Gilbert’s Freestone Recreation Center to close for renovations

PHOENIX – The 50,000-square-foot Freestone Recreation Center in Gilbert will close from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3 as the facility undergoes numerous improvements, the town announced.

The center reopens for use Jan. 4, but the grand reopening celebration will take place Jan. 11. (UPDATE: The center will remain closed until Jan. 11, and the grand reopening was rescheduled celebration for Jan. 18.)

The facility, which debuted in 2002, will feature new lobby furniture, foosball, ping pong tables, padding in the gymnasium and televisions in the fitness center.

They will also be adding 12,000-square-feet of new flooring along with fresh lighting, updated countertops and fixtures.

It will also have new walls in the bathrooms and locker rooms in addition to a change in the holds route on the 42-foot climbing wall.

While the only public, full-service recreation and fitness facility in Gilbert is getting a facelift, the town advises individuals to check out other attractions including the McQueen Park Activity Center, Southeast Regional Library and the Gilbert Community Center.

The grand reopening celebration will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and offer giveaways, free passes, membership specials, facility tours and vendors.
