A police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly charged at him with a knife in Gilbert on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The incident began around 4:30 a.m. when a woman called to express safety concerns about her adult son, according to the Gilbert Police Department.

The caller told police her son was being uncooperative while walking around with a knife outside their home on the 900 block of San Remo Avenue in a residential area near Lindsay and Guadalupe roads.

When the first officer arrived at the scene, the man ran at him while carrying an object in his hand, police said.

The officer called for the man to stop multiple times, but the man kept coming, police said. As the man kept moving closer, the officer shot him, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead after he was taken to a hospital. No officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.

A knife was recovered at the scene of the shooting, police said.

The Mesa Police Department is investigating the police shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
