PHOENIX – Two East Valley suburbs have been judged among the 20 most livable cities in the United States for 2019.
In rankings based on a variety of factors related to ease of life, SmartAsset slotted Gilbert at No. 12 and neighboring Chandler at No. 14.
The personal finance website analyzed the 100 largest U.S. cities in seven metrics to come up with its top 20.
Gilbert and Chandler stood out from the pack in housing cost as a percentage of income, leading the top 20 in the category. Chandler residents spent just 18.6% of their income on housing, while the figure was 18.9% in Gilbert, according to SmartAsset’s analysis.
Only one other top 20 city, Plano, Texas, had a housing cost below 20%.
Gilbert also had the second-best rating on the list in violent crime rate, with 94 incidents per 100,000 residents. Only Irvine, California, with 57, had a lower rate among the top 20 cities.
The other factors analyzed were walkability, property crime rate, unemployment rate, population density and housing cost-burdened rate (percentage of households spending 30% or more of income on housing).
For the second consecutive year, Arlington, Virginia, was rated the most livable U.S. city, followed by No. 2 Plano.
In 2018, SmartAsset published the top 25 in its rankings, and four Phoenix suburbs cracked the list: No. 3 Gilbert, No. 8 Chandler, No. 10 Scottsdale and No. 22 Mesa.
