Rollover van crash in Gila Bend leaves 13 injured, 1 dead

A van crashed and rolled over in Gila Bend on Sunday morning leaving thirteen people injured and one person dead.

PHOENIX — One person died and thirteen more were injured after a van crashed and rolled over near Gila Bend on Sunday morning, according to authorities.

The 14 people were occupants of the van, which crashed near Interstate 8 and Butterfield Road, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The van crashed just before 5 a.m. near a small Arizona town in Gila Bend. No other cars were involved in the collision.

Authorities acted swiftly to help those hurt by rollover crash in Gila Bend

Agents with the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) reached out to CBP from the nearby Ajo Station for help.

Ajo emergency personnel arrived first and immediately provided medical care and stabilized the crash victims.

CBP and DPS agents helped redirect traffic and helped medical transportation helicopters land safely.

“The men and women of the Border Patrol will do anything in their power to help those in need,” Tucson Sector Chief Sean McGoffin said in a Monday news release.

Ten of the passengers were transported by ambulance and three other passengers required medical air flight transportation, according to CBP.

One passenger died at the scene of the accident, according to CBP.

“We know all too well that every second counts,” McGoffin said. “The quick actions our agents take every day can be the difference maker in life or death situations.”
