Give-A-Thon: New Phoenix Children’s CEO John Nickens becomes Champion of Hope

PHOENIX — John Nickens, the incoming CEO of Phoenix Children’s, on Wednesday became one of a growing number who can call themselves a Champion of Hope during KTAR and Arizona Sports’ Give-A-Thon.

During an interview on KTAR News’ The Chris & Joe Show, Nickens pledged $20 a month ($240 a year) to support patients at Phoenix Children’s, a leading pediatric hospital.

“I want to be a champion,” said Nickens, who is fully transitioning to the Valley in October from New Orleans’ University Medical Center for LCMC Health.

The hospital announced Nickens’ hiring in early July, but for him, this week’s annual fundraiser has been meaningful dating back to August 2005.

When Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans, Nickens recalled Phoenix Children’s paused their Give-A-Thon locally and said 50% of whatever they raised was going to Manning Family Children’s.

“Incredible. And they did,” Nickens said. “That kind of gift helped keep the doors open.

“For me, it’s full circle from New Orleans to Phoenix, and I want to say thank you, Phoenix. And the Valley, what you have done and your generosity has affected the entire country.”

As of Wednesday night, the 2025 Give-A-Thon toteboard read $713,023. Last year, the August fundraiser drew in a record $2.37 million and two more days remain.
