Funding for youth summer workforce program approved by Maricopa County board

PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved more than $2.2 million in funding last week for youth summer workforce jobs.

The board voted unanimously and the program will provide employment opportunities for eligible youth participants between ages 16-21 in the summers of 2023 and 2024.

The youth will be matched with employment opportunities within designated in-demand industries, according to a Maricopa County press release.

The program’s effort is to ensure a comprehensive approach to youth development and workforce readiness. It seeks to reach participants in cities and towns beyond the greater Phoenix area, prioritizing access and inclusivity, according to a press release.

The program will be provided in partnership with two organizations, The Greater Phoenix Urban League and Equus Workforce Solutions.

GPUL was awarded more than $16 million to operate its program for the two summers. The 2023 program began on July 1 and will run through September 30. It will return in 2024 on Feb.1 through Sept. 30.

Equus received $596,819 to operate its program in 2024 from Feb. 1 through Sept 2024.
