PHOENIX — More shoppers at Fry’s grocery stores in the Phoenix area will soon be checking out using handheld scanners or their smartphones.

The Scan, Bag and Go program lets shoppers scan their items as they go rather than doing it all at once at the checkout stand. Those using smartphones will have to use the Fry’s app.

Shoppers can also bag their groceries as they buy.

Once they finish shopping, customers will head to the front of the store and complete a brief self-checkout process. The store claimed the program saves shoppers time and money because they can track their bills as they shop.

The chain originally rolled out the technology at its location near 59th Avenue and the Loop 101 in Glendale. It will be introduced in seven more stores by the end of October.

Two locations — one near Happy Valley Road and 67th Avenue in Glendale and another near Baseline and Gilbert roads in Gilbert — already have the scanners in place.

Two Phoenix stores — one near 40th Street and Thunderbird Road and another near Ray Road and Ranch Circle — were expected to start using the technology on Tuesday.

Shoppers at locations near Williams Field and Gilbert roads in Gilbert, Camelback Road and State Route 51 in Phoenix and Bella Vista Road and Hunt Highway in San Tan Valley should be able to start scanning their own groceries next week.

The final two stores to get the technology this month — one near Litchfield and Waddell roads in Surprise and another near Carefree Highway and Cave Creek Road — should have things up and running by Halloween.

Fry’s also offers online shopping. Customers can order their groceries, park in a special spot at the store and have everything loaded by an employee.

Basha’s, Albertson’s and Safeway also allow shoppers to get groceries online.
