Freeport-McMoRan boss was top-paid CEO in Arizona in 2017

Richard C. Adkerson was paid $16.2 million last year to run energy company Freeport-McMoRan, making him Arizona's top-paid CEO in 2017.

PHOENIX — The head of a Phoenix-based Fortune 500 company was the top-paid CEO in Arizona in 2017, according to an Associated Press analysis.

Richard C. Adkerson was paid $16.2 million to run energy company Freeport-McMoRan in 2017.

The Associated Press and executive data firm Equilar identified the highest-paid CEO in each state.

Total compensation was determined by adding salary, bonus, stock awards, stock option awards, deferred compensation and other benefits and perks.

The survey covered publically traded companies with more than $1 billion in revenue that filed their proxy statements with federal regulators between Jan. 1 and April 30.

The top-paid CEO in the U.S. was Georgia’s Frank J. Bisignano, who raked in a whopping $102.2 million from financial data services company First Data.

The typical CEO in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index made $11.7 million last year.

Earlier this week, Freeport-McMoRan landed at No. 176 on the 2018 Fortune 500, which ranks U.S. companies based on their revenues from the previous year.

Adkerson, the company’s CEO since 2003, also represented Arizona on the list in 2016, when he made $14 million. Don Slager of Republic Services was tops in the state in 2015 with $10.9 million.

Freeport-McMoRan has been in the Fortune 500 for 13 years and has more than 25,000 employees globally.

The company, which mines copper, gold and molybdenum, reported $16.4 billion in revenue in 2017. It is the world’s largest publicly traded copper producer.
