Four Peaks hosting stein-holding contest for chance to win Oktoberfest trip

PHOENIX — Four Peaks Brewing is offering up a chance to experience Oktoberfest in Germany for two lucky people who can display their brute strength in a unique way.

Four Peaks, in partnership with the U.S. Steinholding Association, will be holding a series of stein-holding contests, an Oktoberfest tradition that is also known as Masskrugstemmen.

Competitors will have to hold a liter stein of beer at extended outward at shoulder level for as long as possible. The final person to keep the beer in the stein without spilling or bending at the elbows will be declared the winner.

Qualifying rounds for men’s and women’s divisions will take place at several locations across the Valley from Sept. 3 and Sept. 30.

The finals will be held at Four Peaks Oktoberfest at Tempe Town Lake on Oct. 9. The two winners will get an all-expenses-paid trip for two to the 2022 Oktoberfest in Munich and a private tour at the city’s Spaten Brewery.

“If you can hold up a glass for a few minutes, you have what it takes to compete in the Four Peaks Stein-Holding Contest,” Four Peaks co-founder Jim Scussel said in a press release.

“And here’s the best part: Even if you lose, you still get a big mug full of beer, which is its own kind of victory.”

Contestants must be at least 21 years of age. A full list of rules and qualifying round locations is available on Four Peaks’ website.
