Former Arizona Supreme Court Justice dies at 85

PHOENIX — Retired Arizona Supreme Court Justice James Moeller has died at age 85, it was announced Thursday.

According to a press release from the court, Moeller passed away on July 16.

He was appointed to the state’s high court by Gov. Evan Mecham in 1987 and retired in 1998.

Before his appointment, he served on the superior court bench in Maricopa County for a decade.

He remained active after retirement by serving on the Commission on the Appellate Court Appointments and working as an arbitrator.

“Justice Moeller was a great lawyer and an excellent judge,” former Arizona Supreme Court Justice Stanley Feldman said in the release.

“He brought to every case an open mind, independence and a profound knowledge of the law, tempered by common sense and good judgment.”

Moeller is survived by three daughters, three grandsons, and six nieces and nephews. His wife of 45 years, Nancy, died in 2007.

Visitation will be held Aug. 4 at Messinger Mortuary, and a celebration of life will be held Aug. 5 at the Phoenix Country Club.
