PHOENIX — Former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles “Bud” Jones died on Thursday. He was 83.
The Arizona Judicial Branch said Jones died that morning surrounded by his family. He is survived by Ann, his wife of 60 years, and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“As a judge, his commitment was to the rule of law and assuring that the courts did everything possible to make justice accessible to all,” Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Ruth McGregor, who served on the court with Jones, said in a statement.
“As chief justice, he oversaw programs designed to make the courts work better for everyone,” she added.
“As a friend, he was always available to listen and, when appropriate, give advice. His love for his family, his extended group of friends, and the justice system cannot easily be duplicated. We will miss him.”
Jones was appointed to the court by Gov. Fife Symington in 1996. He served as associate justice from 1996 to 1997, vice chief justice from 1997 to 2002 and chief justice from 2002 until he retired in 2005.
Services for Jones will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Phoenix on Jan. 3.
