Here’s why Arizona state buildings are flying flags at half-staff

PHOENIX – State government buildings in Arizona are flying flags at half-staff on Thursday in recognition of National Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week.

Gov. Katie Hobbs ordered flags lowered for the day at state buildings and encouraged individuals, businesses and other organizations to follow suit.

“Together, we remember the peace officers in Arizona and across the country who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Hobbs said in a press release. “Their courage and service will not be forgotten. Let’s honor them by upholding the ideals they defended.”

Flags at half-staff for tribute dating back to 1962

May 15 was designated as National Peace Officers Memorial Day in 1962 as a way to honor law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

National Police Week is held every year during the week that includes May 15 to honor the nation’s law enforcement community.

The 37th annual National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Candlelight Vigil was held Tuesday on the National Mall in Washington.
